What You Missed: SAG Awards 2012

January 30th, 2012

The word of the night was Scorsese or at least according to Bridesmaids’ funny ladies Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy, who attempted to impose a drinking game on the sedated crowd at the Screen Actors Guild Awards yesterday evening.

Sadly, the game never took and for the most part this year’s SAG was a bit of a drag but not without its standout moments.

Who Wow’ed

It was definitely the year of the L.W.D, long white dress, with a slew of actresses arriving in ivory numbers. Zoe Saldana looked beyond elegant in an ornate embellished Givenchy Haute Couture number and Viola Davis looked every bit a winner in a Grecian Marchesa frock but we’ll get to that. Our number one sartorial star of the evening was The Help’s, Emma Stone. In head to toe Alexander McQueen, her strapless dress had a subtle retro nod; it was fun, flirty and edgy – just like Stone herself.

Looking fresh (or not so fresh) from the mosh pit at Coachella, Busy Philipps arrived in a strange hippie-dippie floor length tie-dyed number. Weighted down with layers of necklaces and every bracelet from her jewelry box, the outfit looked more backyard barbecue and less major red carpet event. Philipps should have taken some fashion advice from flawless BFF Michelle Williams, ravishing in Valentino red.

Best & Worst Speeches

We could have done without the overly rehearsed acceptance speech from the cast of Modern Family for Best Ensemble in a Comedy. Although well deserved, seeing someone run off a whole 3 minute skit they had prepared to win, sort of leaves a bad taste in your mouth… Conversely Viola Davis’ win for Best Actress was surprising not only to herself but everyone watching at home. Up against Oscar nominee heavy-weight Meryl Streep the odds seemed slim. But Davis’ won indeed and through teary eyes gave a moving and authentic speech calling out Cicely Tyson, fellow cast mate in The Help and childhood inspiration. She offered up the most memorable quote of the evening, “Dream big and dream fierce!”

Other Big Winners and Winning Moments

Both Outstanding Performance in a Television Movie wins, Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce and Paul Giametti for Too Big to Fail were MIA. Is it just me or should the award just go to a runner up if the winner can’t be bothered to show? Tina Fey, downed Steve Buscemi’s red wine while he accepted his win for Best Actor in a Drama for Boardwalk Empire. While, Sophia Vergara and Julie Bowen had a bottoms up moment when both got beat out by crowd favorite, Betty White for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. Most puzzling fashion moment of the night went to Meryl Streep in a grey Vivienne Westwood that looked 100% like a belted chiffon curtain. You would think she would be eager to sex-it-up after wearing all those dowdy Iron Lady costumes. I guess not. It’s all right Meryl, you still have the Oscars to redeem yourself girl! Upgrade that stylist.
