How would you describe your personal style?

I’m a big tomboy. I always wear something that acknowledges that. For everyday, I like wearing crop tops with jeans or sweatpants.

Do you like to dress differently on stage?

I’ll always wear combat boots or Converse or a pair of cool Nike sneakers, but I’ll upgrade to a dress. Dresses are simple and comfortable and always look good.

Do you have a favourite colour?

Red is becoming one of my favourite colours. It’s bold and it catches your attention. I also like the way it feels and think it’s sexy.

Where do you love to shop?

All Saints, Diesel and Forever 21. I have so much success at Forever 21. I don’t usually spend a ton of money on clothes. If it looks good, I don’t really care where it’s from.

If you had a million dollars, what would you buy?

I would do some damage at All Saints. I love their stuff. It’s cool and kind of vintage-y, but also edgy.

Do you prefer to shop online or in-store?

I enjoy getting into a car, driving to the mall and competing for a parking spot. I just like walking into a store and seeing what catches my eye.

Do you like to shop alone or with people?

Honestly, I always do best when I’m by myself.

Do you work with a stylist?

I have for my music videos. It definitely helped me figure out my own style. I also learned about a few brands I didn’t know. Growing up in the country, I didn’t get out very much, so it was cool to discover brands like All Saints and Diesel, and I even found this urban label from Japan called Shoop — they have the sickest stuff.

What makeup do you always put on before leaving the house?

Eyeliner. Otherwise, I’d look all squinty-eyed.

Favourite beauty brands?

I love Victoria’s Secret lotions. I also use YSL Couture Palette shadows and Touche Éclat. And I love Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner — I kept having allergic reactions to other brands!

Any tips on creating the perfect winged-liner look?

I actually get a better wing when the eyeliner is a bit dried out at the tip.

Any statement beauty looks you’re dying to try?

I would do a crazy eyebrow. I’m not really into the bold lip — it makes me look really old for some reason. I have the pictures to prove it!

What’s the secret to creating your signature ’fro?

The routine is pretty simple: I wet it with a spray bottle, shake it out and apply coconut oil or beeswax before brow-drying the heck out of it and teasing it up.

As someone in the spotlight, do you have any tips on feeling confident?

Be true to who you are. In the past, I experienced what it’s like to let someone else control who they think you should be, and it took me places, but it wasn’t until I put my foot down and said, “This is who I am,” that things really started happening for me. Prince, who I recorded and performed with, used to phone me up and call me out on all that.

Who are some of your other favourite artists?

I’m an old soul, so I’m always listening to Sade and Lauryn Hill. I also go way back to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. I play classical piano, so I always love listening to Oscar Peterson and Chopin. Nora Jones is also a huge inspiration — she sounds like a quiet storm.

What song do you have on repeat right now?

“A Million Years Ago” by Adele. That’s my jam!
