What is acne?
Acne is the inflammation of a hair follicle containing sebaceous glands. When sebum production goes into overdrive (because of, say, your period), it can clog pores and provoke a reaction. To add insult to injury, bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes, which feed on sebum (#gross), jump in and infect the clogged pore, making the whole situation even messier. As you’ve probably guessed, in adult women, hormonal changes are the top culprit to blame as they trigger changes in sebum production.
