Healthy skin starts with healthy eating

According to Tracey L. Carlyle, a dietitian and assistant professor of Food and Nutrition at the University of Chicago, healthy skin starts with healthy food choices. For smooth, flawless skin, it’s important to make sure you’re giving your skin all the nutrients it needs. Tracy recommends adding a good dose of omega-3 fatty acids to your daily diet. As a natural anti-inflammatory, it will protect your skin from damage caused by inflammation. You can find omega-3s in foods like fish, nuts and soybeans.

Eating foods rich in antioxidants is another great way to keep your skin looking fresh and smooth. Antioxidants trap by-products before they can circulate through the body. You’ll find antioxidants in foods like spinach, beans, berries and sweet potatoes.

Minerals like copper and zinc, as well as vitamins, are also key players in maintaining healthy skin. You can find these elements in foods like peanuts, peas and lentils. They repair damaged skin, protect against free radicals and produce collagen naturally. Collagen boosts skin’s elasticity, keeping it firmer and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

You should also be sure to drink eight to 10 cups of water every day to keep your body hydrated at all times. Moisture is the most important element of healthy skin, which starts from the inside out.

Maintaining your healthy skin

If you’re eating well, your skin will be softer and smoother, but it’s still important to complement a healthy diet with a proper skin-care regimen. Opt for a moisturizing body wash and use an exfoliating scrub made from all-natural ingredients like fruit, oatmeal and shea butter. Scrubs remove dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of glowing and revitalized skin.

It’s also important to moisturize your skin regularly from head to toe—preferably after a hot shower, as that can dry out your skin. Instead of chemically enhanced creams, which may cause irritation, look for products made with natural ingredients. They’re surprisingly easy to find and often affordable.
