My foray into the fashion world started one summer as a gangly teenager when I landed a receptionist job at a large photography studio. Watching the industry unfold before my eyes was fascinating and after being asked to fill in for a no-show model, I was hooked! Even though I was slim, agencies told me I was “too large” and, refusing to diet, I put my modelling aspirations aside and took off to university. Years later, as a size 14, I was stopped by a scout in a mall who told me I was perfect just as I was and asked, “Why not try plus-size modeling?” Fifteen years and much fun later, I have had a great time travelling the world hitting Europe, Africa and the Caribbean while living in places like Toronto, New York, Miami and Chicago. As the need to travel is in my blood, my career suits me perfectly. I go to amazing shoots, take part in glamorous campaigns, rock the runways and participate in fun TV shows while meeting new, interesting people all the time. Most fulfilling for me now is getting to speak with children and youth about how to boost self-esteem and create a positive body image. My experiences have provided me a unique perspective and I am lucky now, being able to create and participate in projects that promote the beauty found in all sizes, in all women, and speak to the press about them. I think fashion has a lot to say.
